FORCED TO MOVE
Grain Elevator is Moving
Northern Iowa Grain has lost its lease on its trackside location and will be forced to move at the end of this shipping season. Today the Cascade Western Rail Road has announced that they cancelled the ground lease of Garner & Partners, owners of Northern Iowa Grain in the town of Steven Center, Iowa.
A new lease has been obtained at a location near the depot that is more convenient to town and adjacent to the freight house. After the elevator is emptied of grain later this year, it will be move to this new location and resume business after a months delay. Foundation work at the new location is expected to start soon.
The Cascade Western Rail Road reported that increasing business requires an expansion of its local yard facilities and the only location was on the grounds occupied by the Northern Iowa Grain company’s elevator. They had already been using parts of the elevator track for additional yard storage.
The railroad will expand the local yard from 3 tracks to 5 tracks after the elevator has been move. It is expected that the construction crew working on the mainline extension to Walker will also be doing this work.
